Stephen Sutton: UK Teenage cancer fundraiser dies

Stephen Sutton, the 19-year-old, suffering from terminal cancer, has passed away his family has said.

Stephen had gained the hearts of the nation and his fundraising for the Teenage Cancer Trust has now reached more than £3m, smashing his original £10,000 target.

His mother said he ‘passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of this morning’ in a statement on Stephen’s Facebook page.

“My heart is bursting with pride but breaking with pain for my courageous, selfless, inspirational son who passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday 14th May.

“The ongoing support and outpouring of love for Stephen will help greatly at this difficult time, in the same way as it helped Stephen throughout his journey. We all know he will never be forgotten, his spirit will live on, in all that he achieved and shared with so many. Love, His Mom.”

The bravery of Stephen and his efforts to raise money for other cancer sufferers as he fought his own battle with the disease gained his support from around the globe. “Rest In Peace Stephen,” began trending soon after the news of his death broke.

In his last post on May 11 he seemed in good spirits despite his deteriorating condition. He posted: “The whole thing is very inconvenient aha. I had a few cool things planned to attend today, then tomorrow was due to appear on the telly on BBC Breakfast News! I understand my health is the obvious priority though and have had to cancel. Fingers crossed the issue will be resolved and that I’ll be out of hospital soon, I’ll keep you all updated with how I’m getting on,”

Stephen’s positivity in the face of the disease has become an inspiration for fellow sufferers and his supporters. Only last week he posted this remarkable message about his terminal cancer.

“Ultimately, there is no miracle cure for me. I am potentially the most positive and optimistic person in the world, but we have to be realistic with what we are up against. My disease is very advanced and will get me eventually, but I will try my damn hardest to be here as long as possible. I haven’t died yet, the journey continues, so I guess I’m needed a bit longer,”
