A 19-year-old man from Ottawa has been identified as one of the victims of Friday’s mass murder at the University of California at Santa Barbara.
George Chen, who was studying computer science, was a graduate from Leland High School in San Jose, Calif., and one of six people killed.
Chen was stabbed to death at an apartment he shared with another student and the killer, Elliot Rodger, 22.
Three others were shot dead after the stabbings.
Rodger’s parents had contacted police concerned he would do something violent, but Santa Barbara Sheriff Deputy Bill Brown said they found no reason to put him under a psych hold.
“They found him to be rather shy, timid, polite and well spoken,” said Brown, “He explained to the deputies that it was a misunderstanding and he was not a danger to himself or anyone else.”
