Six Wilson Central students won’t be allowed to participate in Saturday’s graduation ceremony because of their participation in a food fight last week.
The students will receive their diplomas at a later time, Wilson Central Principal Pat Suddarth said.
The food fight was was a senior prank, and students were warned beforehand not to participate, Suddarth said.
Eight students also we’re issued misdemeanor citations for vandalism and disorderly conduct, Wilson County Sheriff Robert Bryan said.
The incident is similar to one in 2009 at a Chicago school where a food fight led to 25 students being arrested and put in jail on charges of reckless conduct.
Parents such as Erica Russell were appalled to hear of their children being handcuffed and “treated like real criminals” as they had mug shots taken and spent eight hours in jail.
Russell spoke of how scared her two eighth- grade girls were and expressed opinions that the punishment was too tough.
