Thousands of cyclists raised more than $6 million Sunday for life-saving research into heart disease and stroke, as they pedalled for hours during Canada’s largest charity cycling event.
Organizers say more than 14,000 cyclists participated in the 27th annual Becel Heart & Stroke Ride for Heart, setting new fundraising and attendance records.
Last year, $5.5-million was raised for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Spokesperson Teresa Roncon says it was a perfect day.
“It was beautiful, sunny, not too too hot … people said they have a very smooth ride; it’s a very festive atmosphere.”
Roncon adds since the foundations was established 65 years ago, the death rate has decreased by 75 per cent, 40 per cent of that in the last ten years.
She explains there’s a lot more work to be done when it comes to heart disease and stroke, but it’s events like this that inspire everyone to live healthier.
