A massive fire that tore through an East Vancouver apartment has left dozens of residents homeless as investigators try to figure out what caused the blaze.
The fire broke out at around midnight at a building on East Broadway near Fraser Street and quickly escalated.
Chuck Stanford is the Assistant Fire Chief and says of the three buildings involved, one won’t make it.
“The main building that was involved is currently unable to be occupied, it’s going to be demolished. There’s extensive smoke and water damage to it. So as I said it will be demolished.”
Stanford says although the investigation continues the blaze seems to be accidental and appears to have started from the ground floor and travelled up.
The three buildings directly involved were not the only ones affected by the blaze.
Julie Vu is the owner of Fantasy Hair Cut Salon next to the buildings involved in the fire and says she doesn’t know when she will be able to re-open and see her clients.
“Maybe we will be open in a couple days and I think it is really big damage for these two buildings.”
Although only one building has been deemed unlivable at this time, the buildings around the fire are still at risk of smoke and water damage.
The fire crews are still on scene but not able to enter the centre building set to be demolished.
