Barrie Student arrested for not going to school

A teenage girl in Barrie spent a night in jail after she was arrested Friday night for allegedly skipping a large number of high school classes.

Barrie police say a warrant was issued March 8 for the 16-year-old girl under the Education Act because she was consistently absent from school without cause and then failed to attend her originally scheduled court date.

On Friday, police say the teen was arrested and held overnight in jail for a bail hearing today.

Students and parents are reminded at this time that in Ontario it is mandatory for persons between the ages of 6 and 18 to attend school. Exceptions to compulsory attendance are explained in section 21 of the Ontario Education Act.

    1. You’ve got to be kidding me. If she doesn’t want to go and waste her time in High School, then she shouldn’t have to. Give her a real education and real learning, and she wont skip it.

Someone needs to be fired for this. “Scared Straight” was taken away years ago. And good job, now she is a criminal clap clap clap clap clap

    3. This is another example how ridicules could be a law if being passed by stupid legislators (without legal education). And this is in free Canada – not in Russia or China? What is going to happen further – to put the teen in jail?
