The little boy’s body was found in a creek Saturday afternoon near the community of Austin after a search by hundreds of volunteers that had been underway since Tuesday.
Police held a news conference saying they’re not looking at foul play in the case but a team of investigators would be working to determine how the little boy died.
Police say it appears the boy walked away from his front yard.
RCMP spokesperson Sergeant Paquet said “this is not the end of our investigation.”
“This appears to be just a tragedy that all of us were hoping to avoid.”
Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger tweeted a message of condolence shortly after the announcement the search had ended.
“Our hearts go out to the family of Chase Martens today. We wish them peace in this time of sorrow,” Selinger said.
The autopsy is expected to be done Sunday.
