Calgary stabbings : Zack Rathwell family “devastated” by loss

As family and friends of the five students killed in the Brentwood stabbing spree prepare to lay their loved ones to rest, the family of the youngest victim said in a statement Sunday it’s a “struggle every day” to understand their son won’t be coming home.

Zackariah Rathwell, 21, was the youngest of those killed at a house party turned crime scene last week. He was an aspiring musician and a first-year student at the Alberta College of Art and Design.

“We are devastated by what happened. It is a struggle every day to understand that Zackariah won’t be coming home. He was so close to so many, and touched the lives of everyone he came into contact with,” the family said.

“To the other families, please accept our deepest condolences for your loss, no one should ever have to lose someone who was so young and full of so much potential.”

Rathwell’s funeral is planned for Tuesday.

“We would also like to thank everyone who has offered their prayers and condolences. We know that as we grieve, the City of Calgary grieves with us. Thank you for all your thoughts and all your prayers. Thank you for caring about Zack,” said the family.
