A pioneering member of Ontario’s hunting dog community is dead and another, his wife, gravely injured after a weekend shooting at a conservation area near Clinton, Ont.
Don Frigo, 70, and his wife Eva Willer are royalty in the Ontario competitive hunting dog community, credited with preserving the sport of field trials — something the pair were doing the weekend they were shot.
“An unknown male approached the two individuals and shot the victim,” OPP Det.-Insp. Chris Avery said in a brief news conference Monday. “The female sustained minor injuries but was able to get to a place of safety.”
Huron County OPP was dispatched to Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13 where they located a deceased man, OPP Const. Jamie Stanley told reporters.
Frigo was riding a horse, as was his wife, at the time he was shot, police said.
Neil Judge remembered Frigo on the Ontario Out of Doors online forum.
“Don was a long time, much respected Shooting Dog Owner/Amateur Handler with many successes…” Judge wrote. “He was a true gentleman and most gracious, winning and losing…We have lost a great man.”
Another poster also called Frigo a “gentleman.”
“Don was a consummate gentleman, both on and off the trial grounds. His contribution to the O.B.D.C.A. (Ontario Bird Dog and Conservation Association) is immeasurable. As such, his absence will be felt both on a personal and a professional level.”
Police are seeking witnesses other than Frigo’s wife, who has been interviewed, Stanley said.
OPP emergency task force officers, canine units and forensic teams are investigating at the scene of the shooting.
The wooded area where Frigo’s body was found is still cordoned off for investigation.
Police have made no arrests and have not released a suspect description.
Frigo was vice-president of Hady Construction Associates on Belfield Road in north Etobicoke.
