David Wynn : Wounded RCMP officer not expected to survive

RCMP have confirmed that RCMP Const. David Wynn is not expected to survive following the shooting in St. Albert Saturday.

Officials said that Const. David Wynn had been “gravely” injured in the shooting and as of Sunday the 42-year-old father of three had not regained consciousness.

Police say Wynn and his partner, 49-year-old Auxiliary Cst. Derek Bond, were trying to apprehend a suspect while investigating a stolen vehicle at the Apex Casino.

Bond was released for hospital Saturday night after being treated for his injuries; gunshot wounds to his right arm and torso.

“I want to emphasize that this was not a case of an officer simply being grazed by a bullet,” says Ryan. “The bullet narrowly missed vital organs and could have inflicted much more serious injuries to Auxiliary Cst. Bond.”

After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene and was found dead later that day at an empty, rural home in Sturgeon county.

Police have identified him as 34-year-old Shawn Maxwell Rehn of the greater Edmonton area.

RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson says Rehn was very, very well know to police.

“And represents a significant accumulation of criminality and behaviors that I think will require the RCMP and other stakeholders in the criminal justice system to examine very closely,” says Paulson.

Rehn has been in and out of jail, including a 2005 incident where a warrant was issued for his arrest after he was accused of breaking into a home and robbing a man at gunpoint.

An autopsy for Rehn is scheduled for Monday.

Ryan is very thankful for the community and their support.

“I was made aware of a very poignant gesture where St. Albert residence were asked to leave a porchlight on last night in support of our members,” says Ryan. “I can tell you that was felt in the heart of all of our members not just in St. Albert, but across the force.”
