Eliahs Knudsen : ‘Dangerous’ man mistakenly released from Dartmouth jail

Police and prison officials are warning the public in Dartmouth, N.S. to avoid a dangerous inmate who was mistakenly released from prison early Friday.

The Nova Scotia Justice Department says Eliahs Knudsen Kent was wrongly released from the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Burnside.

Kent was being held on remand and was to appear in court next week. The department initially said Kent was awaiting sentencing, but later said that was incorrect.

Police are searching for Kent and the department says an internal investigation is underway to find out what happened, the results of which will be made public.

This is not the first time in recent years that an inmate has been mistakenly released from the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility.

In November 2010, the jail prematurely released Vernon Martell, who was serving time for theft.

Martell was out of custody for five days before turning himself in to police.

At the time, the Justice Department attributed the mistake to clerical errors.

    1. There is absolutely NO excuse for them to ever make that mistake. The processes should be put in place by someone who understands accuracy, authorization and accountability.
