A man has died in Hamilton after being mauled by a dog.
Police say he was walking the animal with another man around 11:15 p.m. on Barton Street, in the city’s Harborfront neighbourhood.
That’s when something went wrong and the dog attacked one of the men.
He collapsed as he was being mauled.
A person who was nearby saw what was happening and tried to intervene using a baseball bat, but it was too late to save the victim.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The dog survived and is in the care of Hamilton Animal Control.
It is not clear what kind of dog is involved but unconfirmed reports say it was a pitbull, a breed that is banned in Ontario.
Hamilton Police want to hear from anyone who saw what happened.
