Jim Doak, a fixture on Bay Street for more than three decades and most recently a commentator on BNN, has died in Mongolia. The cause of his death is not known though an autopsy is planned.
Doak was in Mongolia for talks toward realizing a $104 million arbitration award in a long-standing dispute with the government over the cancellation of Toronto-based Khan’s uranium licenses in 2009. The company was granted the award last month, according to a statement.
“He was a strong-willed individual,” David McAusland, a member of Khan’s board of directors who said in a telephone interview from Montreal that members of Doak’s family informed him of the death. “When he felt something was right, he was the kind of guy who stuck to his guns and was going to see it through.”
Doak, who made frequent appearances on Canada’s Business News Network television channel, began his financial career as research analyst in Toronto, eventually advancing to senior roles with Canadian firms such as ScotiaMcLeod Inc., First Marathon Securities Ltd. and McLeod Young Weir Ltd., according to a summary of his career.
Doak was also president and managing partner of Megantic Asset
Management Inc., according to his biography on Khan’s website.
“He was an incredibly dear friend — a brilliant and impressive individual, a renaissance man, and a delightful person to spend time with,” McAusland said. “He was a very unique, special man.”
