Legislation has been introduced to extend human rights protection to transgender Canadians.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in Montreal federal legislation about to be tabled, which will guarantee legal and human rights protection to transgender people across Canada.
“In Canada, we celebrate inclusion and diversity. All Canadians should be safe to be themselves. The law should be clear and explicit: transgender and other gender-diverse persons have a right to live free from discrimination, hate propaganda, and hate crime,” explained Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.
“We are committed to making Canada stronger by ensuring Canadian laws reflect the rich diversity of our people.”
The new and improved bill will recognize and reduce a type of vulnerability transgender and gender-diverse people feel. The bill will fight discrimination, hate propaganda and hate crimes.
The legislation was brought forward by Wilson-Raybould on Tuesday, which is also International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia.
If passed, gender identity and gender expressions will become discrimination under the Canadian Human’s Right Act. Hate propaganda would also be expanded to protect identifiable groups who are targets based on gender identity and expression.
Gender identity is a person’s internal and individual experience of gender and gender expression is how a person publically presents their gender.
Just days ago, Justin Trudeau was awarded the Laurent McCutcheon Award for commitments against homophobia and transphobia.
“We can, and we must, do more for the LGBTQ2 community and to make Canada more accepting and open,” Trudeau stated in regards to winning the award.
