Lois Olsen of Irma, Alta. has her sights on a new ride after winning a $50-million Lotto Max jackpot earlier this month.
“It won’t do a bit different for Christmas; they’re always good,” Lois Olsen said. “Money doesn’t mean a whole bunch to me. I had hard times and I know . . . I still live that way — maybe not now, so much.”
The 80-year-old great-grandma is from the Village of Irma, about 180 km’s southeast of Edmonton.
“For my family, it’s going to help them a lot. Me, I’m too old. I would have liked to win this 20 or 30 years ago.”
The Olsen’s recently received a provincial award for 100 years of family farming on the original homestead, and Lois stayed practical when asked what she was going to buy with the money.
“I’ve got a car that . . . well its 11-years-old; why I’ve never got rid of it is because it’s never cost me a penny except oil, gas and tires, and it’s been a reliable one. And I think I’ll buy now an SUV. Something that’s a little higher for me to get in and out of . . . easier. So that will be the big purchase”
When asked if she would stay in Alberta or move to a Caribbean Island, Lois indicated she was more than happy to stay put saying “nothing extravagant with me.”
She says she had purchased a Lotto Max ticket at the Irma Co-op store and paid a dollar for the extra, which won her a free ticket for the next draw which ended up being the winner.
Lois says she hasn’t splurged on anything yet, but “it’s coming.”
