Police in London, Ont. say a 10-year-old boy has been placed in foster care after an investigation determined that he had been locked in a bedroom in “filthy conditions” for a period of 18 to 24 months.
The London Police Service was contacted by the Childrens’ Aid Society (CAS) of London and Middlesex to assist in a welfare check of the child on Thursday after the agency received an anonymous tip from a member of the public.
“The condition in the bedroom can’t really be described as anything but squalid conditions. There was food waste, and food wrappers throughout the bedroom, feces and urine. The bed was urine soaked, as were the pajamas the young boy was wearing,” says London police Detective Inspector Kevin Heslop. “The child was pale, he was underweight and you could tell he’d been in there for some period of time.”
Police say the boy was living with is aunt and uncle, and he was fed fast food twice a day. After the discovery he was immediatly taken to the hospital and treated for malnourishment. He has since been released.
The two face charges of forcible confinement and failing to provide the necessaries of life. Their biological daughter, who is 9, was also taken from the home and placed in foster care.
The boy was not born in Canada and his parents do not reside in the country. The investigation is ongoing.
