A 14-year-old pedestrian has died in hospital after being struck by a car driven by an off-duty member of the Abbotsford Police Department in B.C.
The Independent Investigations Office has been called in, as is protocol for incidents involving the police and injuries to civilians. The IIO investigators will be identifying witnesses and conducting interviews as well as collecting physical evidence from the scene.
Kellie Kilpatrick with the IIO says the team will be heading out to Abbotsford to talk to potential witnesses. “We have reason to believe there were others that were in the area so we will be conducting neighbourhood canvases, handing out letters, letting people know how to get hold of us. We also have reason to believe there is video surveillance so we will be looking to obtain that from either residents or businesses in the area.”
She notes the investigation may take some time. “When we have investigations involving collision we frequently depend on expert collision reconstruction reports so in this case we will be waiting for those reports before we conclude our file so it could be anywhere from four months to five months but it’s very difficult in these early stages to speculate.”
