Suspended senator Patrick Brazeau will spend at least two months in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre while awaiting trial on alcohol-related charges.
Brazeau looked relaxed in a Gatineau court and even smiled slightly as he accepted the deal worked out Tuesday between defence and prosecution lawyers.
The 39-year-old was arrested on Monday afternoon when he was sitting behind the wheel of his car while allegedly impaired, with a weapon.
Police said they smelled alcohol and he was arrested after failing a breathalyzer test, blowing twice the legal limit.
Police also found a knife in the car.
Brazeau faces three charges: breach of bail conditions (possessing a weapon), impaired driving, and blowing over the legal limit.
His driver’s license was suspended for 90 days, and his car has been impounded for 30 days, police said.
Brazeau has faced a number of legal troubles since being suspended from the Senate in Nov. 2013.
In April, Brazeau was ordered to attend rehab after he was charged with assaulting a woman, making threats against a man and cocaine possession. A Gatineau home he owned with his ex-girlfriend was also seized by the bank in August.
