A man has been fatally shot after an “interaction” with police in Guelph, Ont., according to the province’s Special Investigations Unit.
The SIU says around 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, Guelph Police encountered a man at Guelph General Hospital.
At that time, there was an interaction between officers and the man, and two officers discharged their firearms. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The SIU has assigned six investigators and four forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident.

Meanwhile, Guelph General Hospital says their emergency department remains open for business. However, their waiting room has been contained by the SIU. Grief counseling is currently being offered for staff at the hospital.

There was a very serious incident in Guelph General Hospital’s Emergency Department waiting room this afternoon. The situation is now contained.
The waiting room has been secured by the Special Investigations Unit.
“Our ED remains open although wait times will be longer than usual,” says Marianne Walker, President and CEO.”Our focus now is to provide support to all those who need it including staff, patients and visitors.”
The rest of the hospital has not been affected and visiting is still allowed.
