Police Kill black Bear in Newmarket Backyard (Video)

A black bear that was cornered in a Newmarket residential neighbourhood has been shot and killed, York regional police said.

York Regional Police say the bear had climbed up a tree in the London Road area of Newmarket.

Officers shot it dead as it came down the tree because they say it “became a risk to people in the area.”

Police previously said they were waiting for Ministry of Natural Resources staff to contain the bear.

Five patrols cars, SUVs and SWAT vehicles were at the site on Monday morning.

The bear went up the tree after first being spotted on a homeowner’s deck.

News reports said police were shooting blanks and making other noise to keep the bear frightened enough to remain in the tree.

The sighting marks the second time in two days that a black bear has been seen in the area.
