A Quebec woman who was refused her day in court because she was wearing a hijab has said no thanks to more than $52,000 raised on her behalf through a crowdfunding campaign.
In a letter to them, she says publicity about the case has put her in touch with people who will now help her carry her case forward, and the donated cash would be better spent helping those whose stories have not yet been told.
There had been concerns that accepting the money would jeopardize El-Alloul’s welfare status.
Rania El-Alloul was in court to arrange for the release of her car from impound. It had been seized when police stopped her son and found he was driving with a suspended license. The judge told the woman that her hijab was not appropriate for the courtroom.
Organizers say they’ll take a week or so to decide what to do with the money, which came from over one thousand donors.
Among other things, they’re thinking about setting up a student bursary or giving the money to civil rights organizations or groups which work with immigrants.

On welfare but she owns a car?
Why can’t Muslim immigrants respect our laws?
The son can’t, nor she.
Respect our culture. Canada isn’t just a free ride.
I don’t suppose she would be willing to put some of the money towards a one way ticket home by any chance?
Astounding! On WELFARE for how many years, owns a car, let’s her unlicensed son drive said car, and now figures she has ANY CASE AT ALL about having the car impounded! Get a grip lady, you should have used your (our ) welfare cash to pay the very legitimate fines and fees that come with being irresponsible . Just makes me sick
