The woman facing charges in connection with a weekend accident in Saskatoon that took the lives of a Saskatoon couple and their two children made a brief court appearance Monday morning.

RCMP confirmed a Saskatoon family of four in a Hyundai Elantra was traveling westbound on Highway 11 when they were hit by a Jeep Wrangler SUV that was trying to cross the highway on Wanuskewin Road, Warman RCMP said in a release.

When police arrived on the scene they found two vehicles in the ditch on the north side of Highway 11.

The Saskatoon Fire Department had to extract the 33-year-old woman and 34-year-old man from the front seats of the Hyundai, and a their five-year-old daughter and two-year-old son from the back seat. The mother and father were pronounced dead on scene while the children were taken to hospital in critical condition. The two children died of their injuries in hospital.

49 year old Catherine McKay who was driving the SUV was remanded in custody until Thursday. She is facing impaired driving charges.

At this moment, a 4th charge has not been issued against McKay, but it is expected that will happen before her next court appearance.
