A climbing instructor at Funtopia in Surrey has been fired after she was filmed failing to come to the aid of a crying four-year-old girl – because she was too busy on her cellphone.
Happy Lani posted the video to her Facebook page Wednesday, which shows her child crying while being ignored by a staff member for roughly 50 seconds. The staff member appears to be on her cellphone the whole time.
Funtopia Surrey posted on their Facebook page that the parent did show them the video, and the female “will not work a single minute more at our location.”
The facility is an indoor climbing arena for all ages. On the company’s website it says all children will be under direct supervision.
“Funtopia runs in hour sessions where staff members work with the kids clipping them to an auto belaying systems that allow the kids to climb without an additional parent or another climber to help with their safety. The auto belays are there just to help the kids to climb on their own but there is under direct supervision of the staff members. Before climbing staff will show them brief safety video and then facilitate the fun activities for them.”
Another Facebook comment from Funtopia said that the behaviour by that employee was disturbing and definitely not normal.
“This particular employee has broke at least 3 internal rules, starting with no phones outside of the employees room.”
