Even though he’s recovering in a hospital bed, Mayor Rob Ford is still working to make the city better. Ford released a proclamation officially declaring Saturday “Recovery Day.”
In the missive (featured below) Ford admits to the terrible burden drug and alcohol addiction has had on his life and hopes others don’t make the same mistake he did.
In his written proclamation, Ford calls addictions to drugs and alcohol “crippling” and “terrible and costly burdens, to so many citizens of our city and their families.” But he says there are better days ahead for those who commit to living sober.
“They have regained their dignity and self-respect and loving regard for themselves and those around them by learning that honesty and sobriety along with a full return to citizenship go hand-in-hand.”
Earlier this month, the mayor opened up about his struggle with addiction and his battle with his fiercest challenger–the man in the mirror.
On April 30, Ford took a leave of absence and a day later checked in to a substance abuse treatment centre in Muskoka. He resumed his post as mayor June 30, with help from a sobriety coach, who offered access to round the clock counselling. The two parted ways in mid-July.
“I can assure you: Rob Ford is not going to fail,” Ford said then. “Rob Ford is not going to touch alcohol. I have had my past. I am moving forward in a positive direction.”
