The province is leaving Toronto on the hook for $35 million in Union Station cost overruns and Metrolinx has given the city a “significant” bill to cover the cost of infrastructure upgraded as part of the Union Pearson Express construction.
City manager Joe Pennachetti outlined the report to the executive committee on Monday as part of the ongoing budget debate. According to Pennachetti, the issues will not affect the 2015 budget, but will be part of future capital budgets.
City staff say they were asking for $15 million from Queens Park to cover the $80 million in cost increases in the Union Station revitalization project, another $20 million to cover the $40 million dollar cost increase for the North West Path.
Meanwhile, Metrolinx is seeking payment from the city for a portion of costs paid by the province in the Georgetown South Project and the Union-Pearson Express capital costs that covered and expanded grade separations. Costs also included road reconstruction, and the rail bridges where railway and city infrastructure overlap on the Kitchener GO Rail corridor.
Metrolinx is not releasing the exact amount at this time.
The issue will be discussed by council next week.
