A CN freight train carrying dangerous goods derailed in central Saskatchewan on Tuesday and caught fire.
CN spokesman Jim Feeny says three locomotives were pulling 100 cars when some of them went off the rails.
“Preliminary indications are that we have 26 of those cars derailed. There are no injuries to the crew or to any member of the public. We do have a fire. Two of the cars that are derailed are carrying petroleum distillate. That product has spilled and that is the source of the fire and the smoke.”
Feeny says CN and local emergency crews have all responded.
As for a cause “We are still in very early stages of a response. Initially in an incident like this the initial focus is on the protection of the public and the environment and then responding to any issues that arise. An investigation has been instituted and is underway but again we are in very early stages.”

He did not know how many people have been evacuated from nearby farms and the town of Clair in Saskatchewan.
The Transportation Safety Board also has investigators en route to the scene.
