Underground Fire Cuts Power in Calgary, Report

Thousands of downtown Calgary residents will have to get through the Thanksgiving weekend without power following an underground fire in the core.

At media briefing early Sunday, the city said some 5,000 Enmax customers will be in the dark for between four and seven days after an an electrical fire led to an explosion Saturday night.

Calgary’s mayor is urging people to make arrangements to temporarily move to another location.

Police say the Calgary Emergency Management Agency is working with Enmax to assess the impact on affected residents and businesses of the Calgary power outage.

The Alberta Government issued the following emergency alert:

Access to the telephone network including 9 1 1 service for some land line telephones in the downtown core of Calgary may be disrupted. This is a result of a power outage affecting the downtown core. The 9 1 1 centre itself is functioning normally. If you require 9 1 1 services and your land line phone service is not working, use your cell phone or another person’s cell phone. Local authorities will provide updates via radio, television and online at calgary.ca

Police have set up a security perimeter around part of the affected area, but say people will be allowed in and out.
