The mother of a two-month-old girl has been charged with murder, four months after the infant died in a Winnipeg hospital.
Police say the two-month-old baby suffered severe injuries and was brought to hospital April 27. She died the next day.
“We’re talking about a very serious assualt and the injuries are extensive,” Winnipeg police Const. Jason Michalyshen said Wednesday.
“The following day, the infant succumbed to those injuries.”
A lengthy investigation and an autopsy followed.
Mervat Azmy Dimitry, who police identify as the infant’s 44-year-old biological mother, has been arrested on a charge of second-degree murder.
She remains in custody.
Michalyshen would not comment on a CBC report that said the child had Down syndrome and the mother suffered from a post-partum mood disorder.
“I need to be respectful with respect to personal health information. I’m not in a position to provide those details with respect to an individual.”
