Winnipeg Police have taken a man into custody in connection with the bombing of a law office that seriously injured a woman on Friday.
Police said in a statement they took a 49-year-old man into custody for questioning on Saturday evening but haven’t laid any charges.
Guido Amsel is charged with two counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault and a number of charges related to possessing explosives.
Winnipeg police say it appears Amsel’s ex-wife and legal counsel that have been involved in a lengthy litigation between them have been targeted.
Lawyer Maria Mitousis, 38, was badly injured in an explosion at the Petersen King law offices on River Avenue Friday morning. She remains in hospital but has been upgraded to stable condition.
Court documents show Mitousis was the lawyer for Amsel’s wife during their divorce proceedings, which began in 2004.
On Saturday, police detonated an explosive device at a building on Washington Avenue. No one was hurt, but there was extensive damage done to the building.
Then Sunday night, they detonated another package at the law firm Orle, Bargen and Davidson at the corner of Stradbrook and Donald.
Police believe all three instance are related.
They are concerned that there may be more packages sent out and are asking anyone in the legal community with ties to him to be vigilant, “implore extreme caution”, and report any suspicious packages or items addressed to them.
The packages are believed to have been sent through Canada Post. Police say they have distinct packaging and lettering on them. Those that have been discovered were sent through Canada Post on June 29 or 30. They were delivered July 2 or 3.
