Toho plans new Godzilla movie for 2016 release, Even though Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla did well enough to ensure that the U.S. franchise will continue for the time being, Japan’s TOHO is making a new Godzilla movie for the behemoth’s native market as well.
According to a story over at Variety, Legendary’s Hollywood Godzilla may have prompted Toho to make a new monster movie of itsown. The last Japanese-language Godzilla movie was Final Wars, released in 2004 to a disappointingly tepid reception. It’s hoped that a new Japanese entry in the franchise will tap into the success of Gareth Edwards’ reboot in Godzilla’s home country – his film earned a healthy $26m in Japan.
Of the new Godzilla, producer Taichi Ueda said that, “The time has come for Japan to make a film that will not lose to Hollywood.”
Although little’s known about Toho’s new Godzilla movie, it’s said that production will begin next summer, with the release scheduled for 2016 – that’s two years before Edwards’ planned Godzilla 2, which is set to come out in June 2018.
