A whale that beached itself in Indian Shores was not able to be saved and was euthanized by the state’s mammal stranding team.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says a small sperm whale was found beached on Indian Shores on Tuesday morning. The animal had cookie-cutter like, small shark bite wounds on her.
Officials say it was a female Kogia sperm whale about six and a half feet long. It might be a juvenile, as these species of whales typically grow to about nine to 11 feet in length.
Because of her injuries and that fact she was thin and lethargic, the FWC says the animal had to be euthanized.
Typically when whales or dolphins beach themselves, there is something wrong with the animal. A necropsy is planned for the whale to determine if there was an underlying illness.
