A man stumbled across one of the the world’s rarest turtles on a Devon beach – and is now keeping it in his freezer.

Ben Read discovered the dead Kemp’s ridley sea turtle while out on a seaside walk.

He contacted a friend who was studying marine biology who gave him a contact number for another marine biologist.

Ben, from Torrington, described the turtle in detail over the phone and was told it was the extremely rare Kemp’s Ridley turtle.

“He knew straight away, as soon as I described the markings that it could be a Kemp’s Ridley,” he added.

“He said that the turtles originate from Mexico but are extremely rare and are now critically endangered.”

The Kemp’s or Atlantic Ridley sea turtle is the rarest sea turtle on earth and is on the critically endangered list.

The creature is currently in Ben’s freezer awaiting full identification and further analysis
