One of Queensland’s favourite sons is swapping the sunny Gold Coast for chilly Canada.
Henry, the second polar bear to be born in Australia, will make the move from his home at Sea World in October to the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat.
The Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat in Canada is the only captive bear facility in the world dedicated solely to Polar bears.
It features exceptional animal care standards, educational programs, research partnerships and is an internationally respected centre.
Seaworld said that despite moving to the Cochrane facility, Henry will remain a part of Sea World’s Polar bear population, ‘and our dedicated Polar bear team will continue to have an integral role in his ongoing care.’
‘With his wild genetics from his Canadian born father, Nelson, and his mother Liya’s Russian genetic line not yet included in the Canadian population, Henry will play a vital role in the International Polar Bear breeding program and continue to be a wonderful ambassador for his species,’ a statement from Seaworld said.
The World Wildlife Fund estimates the population of wild bears is at around 25,000, with breeding and conservation projects since the 1970’s helping restore the global population.
