It took authorities five attempts over 38 hours to rescue a stranded two year-old humpback whale on Australia’s Gold Coast.
Scores of volunteer rescuers fought valiantly to free a young humpback stranded on an Australian Beach for nearly two days.
The rescue mission involved making a special harness to allow a high-powered motorboat to pull the whale off the beach.
This came after attempts to refloat the animal failed for five consecutive times because of darkness and low tides.
Volunteers set up tents over the two-year-old male animal for shade and kept it cool using buckets of water and wet blankets, before they finally managed to pull the whale off the beach and back out to the sea on Thursday morning.
Tacha Mulligan from the Sea World expressed hope that the whale will survive despite its ordeal. Mulligan, who has worked for Seaworld for 20 years, said the team had invested “so much of our hearts and soul” into the mission.
The whale is now in open water and a Sea World official was monitoring the animal throughout the day and into the evening.
