A unmanned rocket bound for the International Space Station exploded this afternoon in Virginia.
It happened to be carrying a science experiment created by four Kamloops students.
The student experiment, creating crystals in space by McGowan Elementary students, was one of 19 projects on the rocket as part of this edition of the School Spaceflight Experiments Program and was finally on the way to the space station after several weather-related delays.
Paul Hambling, the principal at Bert Edwards Science and Technology School, coordinated the district program. Grade 5-7 students across the district took part.
