Scott Kelly is back on Earth following an unprecedented yearlong mission in space for NASA.
Scott Kelly now holds the NASA record for 340 consecutive days in space. Counting his last three trips to space, he will have spent a total of 520 days in orbit.
Scott Kelly landed in a Soyuz capsule in Kazakhstan Tuesday at 11:26 p.m., along with Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko, who had been aboard the ISS with Kelly. He’ll return to Houston on Wednesday.
Scott Kelly is the first American to spend a year in orbit. It’s part of a study to test the effects of prolonged space flight.
Scott Kelly certainly has been busy aboard the ISS, doing experiments and space walks, in addition to being a part of a study that will compare the impact living in space had on his body for year. Researchers will compare Kelly with his his identical twin brother – and retired astronaut – Mark Kelly.
“The space station here is a magical place,” Kelly said during his last public news conference aboard the ISS on Thursday. “It’s an incredible science facility we have, it’s a privilege to fly here and it’s something I hope more people will have the opportunity to do in the future.”
Scott Kelly said the hardest thing about life in space is probably being isolated from the people he cares about the most, and missing certain amenities.
The astronaut was given very direct orders from President Barack Obama during the 2015 State of the Union address: “Make sure to Instagram it.” Kelly tweeted more than 1000 times from space, usually of beautiful, out-of-this world images, but also of his everyday life. He posed while making coffee, getting a flu shot, and took selfies.
