Zoo Worker Injured by Komodo Dragon Bite Sunday.
An Omaha, Nebraska, zoo worker was treated at a hospital after she was bitten by a dangerous Komodo dragon Sunday.
Henry Doorly Zoo Officials say that the supervisor of their reptile department was bit around 12:30 Sunday afternoon by a young Komodo Dragon.
After two stitches to her hand and some antibiotics, she is back at home and expected to be back on the job as soon as Monday.
The Henry Doorly Zoo is home to three Komodo Dragons. One dragon is fully grown and on display in the Cat Complex. The other two dragons are 10 pound females named Mel and Sally.
Zoo Officials told KMTV that the woman bit has more than a decade of experience as a reptile keeper at the zoo. The woman was in the cage with the two young Komodos when she was bit on the hand by one of them.
Zoo officials say even though the bacteria-filled saliva of a Komodo is extremely dangerous and potentially deadly, it’s not common for them to bite.
“It is not really in their nature at all, for some reason this morning they were extra excited about something and decided to take it out on their keeper,” said Stephanie Huetner, the Assistant General Curator at the Henry Doorly Zoo.
Zoo officials say the last time a keeper was bit by an animal was back in 2009 when Dr. Douglas Armstrong was bit by a tiger. Dr. Armstrong was okay after receiving medical treatment.
