LPGA commissioner Mike Whan wasn’t pleased with Golf Digest’s choice for the cover of its May issue.
In a strongly worded statement Friday, Whan chastised the magazine for passing over “superstars” in women’s golf with its decision to put Paulina Gretzky on the cover of its new fitness issue.
Stacy Lewis has two majors to her credit but has never appeared on a Golf Digest and was not too happy when speaking to Karen Crouse of the New York Times.
“It’s frustrating for female golfers. It’s kind of the state of where we’ve always been. We don’t get respect for being the golfers that we are. Obviously, Golf Digest is trying to sell magazines. But at the same time you’d like to see a little respect for the women’s game.”
Juli Inkster a World Golf Hall of Famer added:
“It’s frustrating because it’s Golf Digest; it’s not Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue,” Inkster said, adding: “I think they should maybe recognize some of the great women golfers that we have. It’s like, What do you have to do to get a little respect? I’m guaranteeing you right now, it was not a woman editor who chose that cover.”
Some will argue that the attention of Paulina on the cover could draw interest to LPGA coverage inside the magazine but I dunno how many of those people would get past the photos of Gretzky.
