Gomes’ beard was shaved Wednesday on the “FOX & Friends” morning show. The fresh shave not only marks a new beginning for the Red Sox outfielder, but it also was done to raise money for a good cause.

With the shave, Gomes got Norelco to donate $10,000 to the Travis Roy Foundation in order to help wheelchair competitors in future Boston Marathons.
“Pretty amazing story with where he’s come from and where he is now and the tragedy that he’s gone through,” Gomes said of Roy, a former Boston University hockey player who was paralyzed in his first game and has created his foundation to assist survivors of spinal cord injuries.
“What I’m doing personally is I’m trying to raise as much money as I can. We want to just buy a fleet of wheelchairs, handcarts and buggies to give people that are unfortunate to not be on their two feet and active as they once were at some point [a chance to ride].”
