The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV cometh. Forbes not only reported the Bolt EV was spied hanging out in a residential Michigan neighborhood, but also provides some insight for final testing procedure in regards to Tesla.

The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt has moved from auto show concept to a realized production vehicle. Promising more than 200 miles of all-electric range and a starting price around $30,000, the Bolt could be a real electric solution for people with long commutes, not just short city drives.

Looking like a Honda Fit and sized roughly like a Buick Encore, the Bolt is a five-passenger, four-door hatchback. It’s more than a foot shorter than its more well-known hybrid counterpart, the Volt, but actually offers more cargo space at 16.9 cubic feet.

What’s Under the Hood?

The Bolt will be propelled by an electric motor and direct-drive transmission, powered by a 60kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The motor can produce up to 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, numbers that should deliver respectable performance for the nearly 3,600-pound hatchback. Chevy says the Bolt will max out at 91 mph and be able to cover zero to 60 mph in less than 7 seconds.

Selectable drive modes will tailor accelerator response and suspension settings for conditions like commuting slogs or open-road cruising.

The Bolt’s battery system comes with a 7.2 kW onboard charger. Connected to a 240-volt outlet, it can replenish the Bolt’s battery with 50 miles of charge in less than two hours. An optional fast-charging connector can add 90 miles of range in a half-hour.

What Features Will It Have?

A floating center dash design houses a 10-inch color touchscreen display, the main interface for the Bolt’s navigation, audio and technology functions. Chevy says the Bolt can plot EV-specific navigation routes for maximum range and provide the locations of nearby charging stations. It will also eventually be able to issue accurate range projections based on time of day, topography, weather and an owner’s driving habits.

A low-energy type of Bluetooth connection minimizes energy draw and connects to a smartphone as an owner approaches the car, and there’s also OnStar 4G LTE connectivity, which turns the car into a WiFi hotspot.

Dual smartphone slots in the center console are another neat touch (no more repurposing cupholders to hold your phone). as is a traditional rearview mirror that can display a wide-angle image from the rearview camera. A 360-degree camera view is also available and viewable on the central display.

How Much, When Is It Available and What Else Is Out There?

The Bolt goes into production in Michigan in late 2016 and, if delivered quickly, can fill an open EV niche.

Starting at $37,500 before tax credits, the Bolt is far cheaper (and has longer range) than a BMW i3. The Tesla Model S 60 offers loads of room and also around 200 miles of range, but costs twice as much. The Nissan Leaf is the bargain of the segment, starting in the low $20Ks. But with 80 miles of range, it’s better suited to shorter commutes and frequent charging.
