Lower speed limit takes effect this week, Report

Toronto drivers, especially those in East York, will see something new on their streets this week: lower speed limits.

Councillor Josh Matlow says signs will be changed, beginning in Ward 22, from 40 km/h to 30 km/h “sometime this week.”

“This will not affect arterials and collectors,” Matlow says in an emailed statement.

It’s part of the Medical Officer of Health’s recommendations supported by Toronto East York Community Council, which voted unanimously in favour of the slower speeds in June.

Matlow says a few wards are expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The estimated cost of changing all the road signs and adjusting traffic signals is $1.1 million.
