Pokemon Go Canada: Police catch drivers playing smartphone game

Vancouver Police warn drivers not to ‘Pokemon and drive’ after issuing six tickets in just two days to people playing behind the wheel.

The traffic unit sent out a tweet saying its officers have been catching drivers playing the game while on the road.

“Pokecop gets them all!” read the tongue-in-cheek tweet.

Earlier this month, as the Poke-phenomon gained steam, the VPD issued a “distracted gaming” warning, asking people to put the phone down while driving, biking, or using skateboards.

It also issued a list of guidelines for players to stay safe:

  • Look up – be aware of your surroundings. Are you about to step into traffic? Are you going to crash into someone or something? You could end more than just your game.
  • It is very easy for any stranger to know your gathering spots. Make sure you go with a group, and that younger kids tell parents or another adult where they’re going.
  • Say no to distracted game playing – don’t play while riding your bike, skateboard, scooter, or while driving.
  • Vancouver has lots of public space. Don’t go on or in private property.
