Construction is underway to widen the bike and pedestrian lane on the Stanley Park Causeway.

The $7-million project to improve safety on the narrow road that connects downtown Vancouver to the Lions Gate Bridge came about after a 61-year-old woman was killed while cycling in 2013. She was struck by a bus after falling onto the street in order to avoid a pedestrian.

The province and the park board consulted with the public last winter. They landed on a design that includes wider sidewalks, safety fencing and removing 14 trees. Unlike last time a widening was proposed, there were no protests about the loss of trees.

The construction will last for the remainder of 2015. Drivers should not expect changes during the daytime, but there will be overnight lane closures.
