2 Deaths in thunderstorms, officials say

Ontario County Deputies say that two people were killed when a tree fell on their car during stormy weather in the Town of Phelps on Tuesday evening.

Deputies say that a 2004 Kia Optima was traveling south on County Road 6 when a tree fell onto the vehicle, crushing its roof.

Officials say both victims were in their 20s and were traveling in a car with out-of-state license plates. Their names haven’t been released.

Powerful thunderstorms were passing through the region at the time, knocking out power to several thousand homes and businesses in neighboring Ontario and Monroe counties.

The National Weather Service has issued flash flood watches Wednesday for areas of upstate New York stretching from the Buffalo area to the Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks.
