Shocking images of a 6-year-old McDonald’s Happy Meal that changed little are creating a buzz on social media.

“It’s been six years since I bought this ‘Happy Meal,’ at McDonald’s” writes Jennifer Lovdahl. “It’s been sitting at our office this whole time and has not rotted, molded, or decomposed at all.” Lovedahl encourages others to “choose real food” like apples, bananas, carrots and celery.

Several experiments have put fast food to the decay test. In Buzzfeed’s Burger Decay Test they bought seven cheeseburgers from different restaurants and put them in glass jars to see how they would look after a month. Serious Eats compared a McDonalds hamburger against a homemade burger in a test and found no big difference in decomposition. According to the study, McDonalds burgers did not decompose because of their small size and relatively small surface area, which helps them lose moisture very fast.

McDonald’s responded to the tests on their website. According to them their food can rot if it is exposed to moisture. “You might have seen experiments which seem to show no decomposition in our food. Most likely, this is because the food has dehydrated before any visible deterioration could occur,” writes McDonald’s.

So, Lovdahl might not be far off when she says “The box will decompose before the food does!”
