An Arizona inmate, who has been in jail since January, made a daring attempt to see his sweetheart on Valentine’s Day. His attempt resulted in a mere few hours of freedom, as he was captured shortly after meeting up with his girlfriend.
The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said that inmate Joseph Andrew Dekenipp was arrested in the town of Coolidge, a few hours after he escaped Friday from the county detention center.
The office says he would undergo treatment for serious cuts he got from the wire.
The Arizona Republic reported that Dekenipp, 40, was arrested without incident after he arrived at the Galloping Goose, a saloon and grill, where he was to meet his girlfriend.
“We had talked to some of the other inmates who he was staying with and they told us he was lonely, it was Valentine’s Day he wanted to go see his girlfriend, so that’s why he planned his escape,” said Tim Gaffney, of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.
Dekenipp has been in jail since his arrest Jan. 10 on suspicion of vehicle theft, trafficking in stolen property, unlawful flight, and driving on a suspended license.
Officials said he is now facing an escape charge.
