Arrested For “Manspreading”? NYC Subway Manspreaders Profiled And Arrested

Two men from Brooklyn were arrested for ‘manspreading’, it has been revealed, after police found them taking up too much room on the subway.

The bizarre arrest was revealed after the Police Reform Organizing Project scoured court testimonies to produce a PDF that aimed to examine the NYPD’s attitudes to race and class.

But a document which detailed the bizarre crime was also found, and described how two men were arrested for the bizarre offence.

The document read: ‘On a recent visit to the arraignment part in Brooklyn’s criminal court, PROP volunteers observed that police officers had arrested two Latino men on the charge of “man spreading” on the subway, presumably because they were taking up more than one seat and therefore inconveniencing other riders.

‘Before issuing an [adjournment contemplating dismissal] for both men, the judge expressed her skepticism about the charge because of the time of the arrests: “12:11AM, I can’t believe there were many people on the subway’.

Both men received an ACD – which means that the charges will be dropped if they avoid arrest for a determined period of time.

The New York Metropolitan Transport Authority prohibits taking up more than one seat if it happens to interfere with the functioning of the train or ‘comfort of other passengers’.

    1. If you’ve travelled in the NYC subway during rush hour, you would understand why man spreaders are a public nuisance. They use this stance as a form of intimidation. As a result, fights, shoot-outs, and beatings are not uncommon. I hope more arrests are forthcoming.

    2. Can people not just ask them to move over/close the legs so they can sit down? We can argue for days over gender and whatnot, but that cost the state money and took up police time that could have been spent keeping the streets safe. Yes it’s an inconvenience, but this really shouldn’t be an arrestable offence.

    3. I am life long New Yorker, male, 6’4″ tall and do not “manspread” I was raised to be polite. Simple as that.
But if the NYPD is actually going to ticket and arrest men for this they should also ticket and arrest both sexes
(womem tend to do this more than men) for walking and being glued to their phones and not watching out for others. There is a much bigger chance of an accident doing this versus “Manspreading”
