Austin Goodner : Man who shot officer told police to shoot him, chief says

Austin Goodner told officers ‘Go ahead and kill me’ in shootout.

Officials say police fatally shot an 18-year-old at his Florida home after he argued with four people near a city pool, shot a man on a bike in the arm, and then shot an officer in the leg.

St. Petersburg police Chief Anthony Holloway says 18-year-old Austin Goodner was known to officers before the Sunday incident, having been involuntarily committed twice in 2011 and arrested for aggravated battery.

Officers went to Goodner’s house, where they say they found him in the backyard, holding a .9-mm gun.

The chief says Goodner raised the weapon at the officers, and that’s when they shot him. Holloway says Goodner returned fire and struck 40-year-old officer Michael Cordiviola in the leg.

Holloway says Goodner yelled, “Go ahead and kill me” to officers during the shootout.

Cordiviola is recovering.
