Baby’s body found on Sydney beach, Two boys playing on a beach in Sydney have stumbled across the body of a baby buried under the sand, police in Australia have said.
The grim discovery was made on the southern end of Maroubra beach on Sunday morning.
“Investigations into the child’s death are continuing, however, the age and sex of the child is yet to be determined,” the statement said.
Inspector Andrew Holland also noted that the “very small infant child” was buried naked under some 30 centimeters of sand, adding that the boys who uncovered the body were six and seven years old.
Holland further said that investigators were consulting with the Missing Persons Unit and looking through birth and hospital records in an attempt to find the child’s parents.
Police evacuated the area and established a crime scene at the beach after the grisly discovery.
A post-mortem is also expected to be conducted to determine how the baby died.
“To say that I’m shocked is an understatement,” local Randwick Mayor Ted Seng said, adding, “I cannot imagine the circumstances that lead to this tragic event.”
Last Sunday, a newborn baby was also found crying at the bottom of a roadside drain in Sydney, with police saying that he had been abandoned in a 2.5-meter-deep drain for five days.
