A funeral was held Saturday for Bella Bond, who was known as “Baby Doe” for months after her body was found on Deer Island earlier this year.
A private service for Bella was held at Caggiano & Son Funeral Home, followed by her burial in Winthrop.
“This has been a long process for many people in the community,” said Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo, of Winthrop, who organized a special mass so the community could mourn Bella’s memory. “That gives us some good feeling that as she rests, she can look down and say that she was loved.”
Bella’s biological father, Joseph Amoroso, said he wanted a public service, but decided on a private funeral after an agreement was reached with the baby’s mother, Rachelle Bond, who is charged as an accessory for assisting Michael McCarthy in the slaying of the girl.
“She touched so many hearts,” said Phil Boncore, a Town Councilor of Winthrop. “I am feeling relieved that Bella is finally being put to rest.”
The two-year-old was buried next to her paternal great-grandmother and is looked upon by many in the community as a daughter of Winthrop.
“I dare say daughter of the Commonwealth and beyond,” said DeLeo.
